Vinst is a Knud Reimers designed 42’ 22 Square Meter built in 1941 at the Rotholmen's yard in Stockholm, Sweden. She was built to the Square Meter Rule, a 1907 Swedish Sailing Federation class rule that lead to some of the most radical, forward-thinking, beautiful boats of the era. Knud Reimers was among the rule's most talented and prolific designers and Vinst is a prime example. She has characteristic low freeboard, narrow beam, long graceful ends and low-profile cabin house. The cockpit is optimized for racing and the interior very minimalist.
Vinst is a composite boat; copper riveted mahogany planking with white oak and steel frames, laminated oak and mahogany deck beams. The deck-stepped, laminated Sitka spruce rig is fractional, heavily raked, and tear drop in section. The backstay is on a cascading purchase and runners are tuned from ratcheting wheels mounted under the side decks in the cockpit. Her deck hardware has been thoughtfully upgraded. Everything is run back to the cockpit and she carries inventory of 13 sails.
Vinst is perfect for an experienced sailor looking for a beautiful, minimalist, performance-oriented boat for daysailing and classics/PHRF racing. She’s stunning to look at, sails extremely well, has a great pedigree and is in very good condition. Vinst is currently stored at her owner’s home in Monroe, ME and ready for showings.
Square Meter Class: The other two early 20th century rating systems, Herreshoff's Universal rule (Letter Classes J-S) and the International Rule (Meter boats, 6,8,12) were rather restrictive, having been written in direct response to the increasingly extreme, impractical and dangerous raceboats of the late 19th century. Material science and yacht design had taken off in the 1880’s and 90’s and rating rules had failed to keep up.
Needing to accommodate the long, narrow, lightly built Skerry Cruiser’s popular at the time, and fearful that they would stifle innovation with too restrictive a rating rule, the Swedish Sailing Federation chose not to follow suit. What they came up with instead was the Square Meter Rule. It grouped boats into classes based on strict rig measurement parameters but did little to regulate overall sail area and hull form.
Vinst’s History: Vinst was raced successfully in her home country from 1941 until 1950 (see photos from the Swedish Maritime Museums archive) when she was sold and shipped to America to join the Chicago Yacht Club’s 22 sq. Meter class. Vinst was sailed very competitively in Chicago through the mid 70’s and then the details of her ownership become unclear. She underwent two relatively significant refits in Wisconsin in 1986 and 2006. Her current owner bought her in 2011 and brought her to Rockport Marine where her plank keel, garboards, deadwood and keelbolts were replaced.
