The Tyee Spirit skiff originates from Campbell River, a small community on the east coast of Vancouver Island. Every summer a large run of Chinook Salmon return to the river mouth ready to spawn, and those fish that have matured to over 30 lbs. are called "Tyee" salmon. About 1910 Ned Painter, a local boatbuilder, began turning out beautiful lapstrake cedar planked rowboats 14 feet in length and 4 feet 2 inches in beam. These became very popular with the local sport fishermen, and Painter's boats became renowned for the way they carried a load and comfortably handled the choppy tidal waters around Campbell River. A local industry grew up around these boats featuring professional salmon guides who worked the "Tyee Hole" every season. Flotillas of rowboats still ply the river mouth, a guide at the oars and one or two sportsmen holding their rods anticipating a strike. In 1924 the world famous "Campbell River Tyee Club" was founded. To qualify as a club member one must, while fishing from a rowboat handled under oars alone, land - unassisted - a Tyee salmon. In the mid 1960s another Campbell River resident, "Doc" Murphy, revitalized interest in the early Painter design by reproducing them in fiberglass. The Tyee Spirit was taken off one of Doc Murphy's original fiberglass models owned by Bill Herkus who has guided for over forty seasons. It was Bill Herkus and Discovery Guides owner, Mike Barker, who convinced Whitehall Reproductions to build a quality Painter's boat for themselves and other fishing guides. They insisted that we call this new boat the "Tyee Spirit." Since 1987 Whitehall Reproductions has built a good number of these splendid boats often fitted with special custom detail work such as center seat backrests, upholstery, tackle drawers, and running lights. As a result of its fuller hull shape the sailing model of the Tyee Spirit is quite roomy, accommodating three or four people. The boat sails best with the crew sitting on the floor as in dinghy sailing. Sitting low in the hull also gives great all-around visibility. The attractive, efficient, easily-handled lug rig assembles in less than five minutes and can be stowed inside the boat with the mast. It features a kick-up rudder and a solid teak drop dagger board. Simple, efficient, and fun, the Tyee Spirit is easy to load or unload utilizing a small trailer.
